THE STORY

Four adolescents from the northeastern region of North America, who are entering 8th grade in the Fall, are attending a prestigious rock music camp, at which they have been grouped together randomly and tasked with creating an original song to be performed at the camp-wide, end-of-summer Chilton Concert. The winning group, as determined by a panel of judges, will go on to open the Green Mountain Bash, the area’s famous music festival. As they write and rehearse the music in their repertoire over the course of the summer, the songs serve as a window into the story of how they came to be a band and grew into their authentic selves over a crucial time in their lives.

THE MUSIC

Side 1

Grounded 🎵

Grounded. I’m staying in today
Grounded. There’s not much left to say
Grounded. I’m better off this way
Grounded…I’m Grounded

Grounded. The tide just won’t turn
Grounded. When will they learn
Grounded. The fire still burns
Grounded…I’m Grounded

What will you do?
What will you say?
When the lights go
When the lights go out
Where will you go?
There’s nowhere to hide

Grounded. For what it’s worth
Grounded. Before I left the earth
Grounded. From the day of my birth
Grounded… I’m Grounded
Grounded… I’m Grounded
Grounded… I’m Grounded

(I Want To Be a) Rock Star

I’m gonna be famous
Nothing will stop me
There’ll be millions of people
And I’m who they want to see

I’ll be like a plane
Soaring over supersonic speed
I’ll be like a flame burning

I want to be a Rock Star
This is my dream
For the first time in my life
I feel pure energy
No. Nothing will slow me down

Step into my boots
Pull my hat down low
Then I strum my guitar
And I know where I need to go

I’ll be like a train
Pressing forward so relentlessly
You’ll see my name in lights

I want to be a Rock Star
This is my dream
For the first time in my life
I feel pure energy
No. Nothing will slow me down

My band behind me
Drummer counts to three
The amplifier screams my melody

I’m gonna be famous
Nothing will stop me

I want to be a Rock Star
This is my dream
For the first time in my life
I feel pure energy
No. Nothing will slow me down
I want to be a Rock Star
This is my dream
For the first time in my life
I feel pure energy
No. Nothing will slow me down
Nothing will slow me down

Role Reversal

Has anyone seen my youth?
Caught in a role reversal
It’s hard to know where I begin
And end in a role reversal

A raft lost at sea
Guided by mistakes of others
I steer the raft in vain
Destination predetermined

My limbs grow tired
From carrying the sins of others
How many tons I’ve hauled
No one’s counting

Has anyone seen my youth
Stuck in a role reversal
How many parts of me
Are hidden in a role reversal
Has anyone seen my youth
Stuck in a role reversal
It’s hard to know where I begin
And end in a role reversal

A day without worry
An hour to act my age
A minute to be myself
And a second to breathe

Who’s going to comfort me
Who’s going to make me believe
Will there be anyone left
I’ve given myself away

Has anyone seen my youth
Stuck in a role reversal
My dreams remain on hold
Not lost in a role reversal
Has anyone seen my youth
Caught in a role reversal
My dreams remain on hold
Not forgotten in a role reversal

That Groove

Woody Guthrie and Johnny Cash
Meet Led Zeppelin and the Clash
See Miles Davis, John Coltrane
Play downtown with BB King

A little shuffle some dirty blues
All thrown together to find that groove

That Groove
They’re all searching for That Groove.
The crowd is screaming for That Groove.
The poets dreaming for That Groove

Ella skats a Gershwin hymn
As Beyonce reels them in
And Leonard speaks in Baritone
While Big Man wails on his saxophone

The preacher’s gospel and hip hop cool
cohabitate in that nasty Groove

That Groove.
We’re all pining for That Groove
They’re all lining up for That Groove
The gold they’re mining for That Groove.

Mozart knew at the age of four
What Neil Young feels down to his core
And Marley screamed it, Sam Cooke believed it
And Nina made us beg for more

Stir in some jazz and a pinch of soul
then bring it slowly up to a boil

That groove
They’re all searching for That Groove.
The crowd is screaming for That Groove.
The poets dreaming for That Groove
That Groove.
We’re all pining for That Groove
They’re all lining up for That Groove
The gold they’re mining for That Groove

Castaway

What’s the use of feelings anyway
When nobody cares what I think or say
I just keep them neatly tucked away

My face might look unbothered
But I am distraught
Some words are left unspoken
But not left unthought

Why has life been rearranged this way?
Why did no one ask me if I want to stay?

I’d rather they not see me cry
I just smile and wave goodbye
Try and stay afloat
I am a Castaway
The waterfall of tears I’ve fought
My opinion was not sought
Drifting like a little Castaway

“You can make new friends”
That’s all I hear
But what if no one likes me
That’s my greatest fear
What if everybody thinks I’m strange?
What if I can’t help but feel a bit ashamed?

I’d rather they not see me cry
I try to run and hide
I search for shelter
Just a Castaway
And no matter how I swim
The current drags me back again
Shipwrecked and alone

Over and over I rode on your shoulders
You lifted me up when I was too short to see
Now that I’m older, the world’s gotten colder
And it’s all up to me

I’d rather they not see me cry
I just smile and wave goodbye
Try and stay afloat
I am a Castaway
And no matter how I swim
The current drags me back again
Drifting like a little Castaway

Poisoned Shadow 🎵

It Follows me everywhere
But I try not to care
My poisoned shadow

At first I tried to shake it
But I could not forsake it
My poisoned shadow

I threw it all away
It hangs around each day
just to remind me
Just to remind me
Of everything I’ve lost
And all the lines I crossed
Just to remind me
My poisoned shadow
Just to remind me
My poisoned shadow

Leave me alone
Stop following me
Let me forget
I want to forget.

Sometimes at night it’s gone
So I can finally roam
My poisoned shadow

But then it’s back
Ready to attack
It’s my poisoned shadow

I threw it all away
It hangs around each day
Just to remind me
Just to remind me
Of everything that’s turned
And all the bridges burned
Just to remind me
My poisoned shadow
Just to remind me
My poisoned shadow

Leave me alone
Stop following me
Let me forget
I need to forget

Just to remind me
My poisoned shadow
Just to remind me
My poisoned shadow

Flying 🎵

I’m just flying
No denying
There is no place too far away
If I’m not flying
At least I’m trying
Roaming around the world

When it’s time to leave my troubles all behind
I just grab my wings and then I step outside
And I feel the wind and the eagles call my name
Never going back again

I’m just flying
No denying
I’m the pilot of this plane
If I’m not flying
At least I’m trying
Leaving for parts unknown

When I’m drifting slowly far above the clouds
And the sun is shining and I hear no sound
And the sky just opens up in front of me
I have been set free

Rainwater quenches my thirst
Soft clouds become my bed
I keep company with the doves
Exploring from above

I’m just flying
There’s no denying
Floating in my private space
If I’m not flying
At least I’m trying
To find a better place

I’m just flying
There’s no denying
I’m the pilot of this plane
If I’m not flying
At least I’m trying
To find a better place
I’m free

Side 2

After the Rain

Look out horizon
I can see the weather turning
Off in the distance it’s heading this way
Today it’s pouring but this storm is not here to stay

Feel the rays upon your face
Even if the sun won’t shine
Feel the warmth upon your skin
Use your mind

After the rain is gone
After the rain we’ll breathe again
After the rain is gone
Only the rainbow

Know the stars are still above us
On a cloudy night
Together listen to the silence
See what’s out of sight

Will this day be a throwaway
Or one to remember
And no one can decide this for us
It’s in our hands

Look out horizon
I can see the weather turning

After the rain is gone
After the rain we’ll need a friend
After the rain is gone
Only the rainbow
After the rain is gone
After the rain we’ll breathe again
After the rain is gone
Only the rainbow
After the rain is gone
After the rain we’ll meet again
After the rain is gone
Look for the rainbow

Letting Go (Is the Hardest Part)

Who am I to change the natural course of events
How can I make you stay
I’ve been hoping that this day would never come
But now it’s finally today

The feelings build up and I fight it
It hurts so I try to deny it

Letting go, letting go
Is the hardest part.
As long as you hold on
You can’t move forward
It’s the hardest part

There were times I didn’t even know your name
Or notice you were standing there
But you rose to front and center in my life
And now I can’t imagine you not there

I keep pushing despite the resistance
While the answer is off in the distance

Letting go, letting go
Is the hardest part
I try to be strong
But inside I’m hurting
It’s the hardest part
It’s the hardest part

“Things happen for a reason,” I’m told
And “Time will heal all of the wounds”
those clichés are sweet and meant to help
But it’s me that has to live this through

They tell me it’s time to start grieving
But I’m not ready to stop believing

Letting go, letting go
Is the hardest part
The memories will haunt me
I’ll never forget
It’s the hardest part
It’s the hardest part
Guess I’m in my own again

They’re Afraid of Me

I have a soul if you don’t know
Right behind what’s there for show
All the while I can’t find
Something I can call my pride

All around the crooked time
I sit and chime in on everything I don’t know

They’re afraid of me
They’re afraid of me

Behind the glass this is the place
Where dreams unwind and twist my face
I call alone, I breathe alone, and forget everything

But they’re afraid of me
They’re afraid of me
They’re afraid of me
They’re afraid of me

I want to shut the war out
It’s destroying everything
When nothing’s taking over
We can’t feel anything

Walk around the ancient pines
You’ll see me
Come along but take your time
You’ll see me
Pay my brutality no mind
And you’ll see me
But they’ll never see
Cause they’re afraid of me

They’re afraid of me
They’re afraid of me
They’re afraid of me
They’re afraid of me

PJ’s Lullaby 🎵

It is silent
Night has fallen
And it starts to snow

Earth is covered
By its blanket
Off to sleep you’ll go

Always, always
You’ll own every corner of my love

When you’re smiling
I can see
The music your heart makes

You can tell me
All of your dreams
When your body wakes

Always, always
You’ll own every corner of my love

You’ll own every corner of my love
You’ll own every corner of my love

Earth is silent
Snow has fallen
Soon the flowers grow

Always, always
You’ll own every corner of my love
Always, always
You’ll own every corner of my love

Surrounded 🎵

Standing at the doorway to another world
Whatever you do don’t turn back, I’ve been told
It’s cold and I’m, afraid to move forward paralyzed

Floating through a new space in the dark
I’m lost and I can’t tell which way is up
I wish I could close my eyes and disappear
But then a voice, your voice:

You are not alone
You are surrounded
You are not alone
Never
You are not alone
You are surrounded
You are not alone
You’re surrounded by love

The words on the page don’t make any sense
The numbers are confusing in my head
I don’t think I’ll ever really get it straight
But then a voice, your voice:

You are not alone
You are surrounded
You are not alone
Never
You are not alone
You are surrounded
You are not alone
You’re surrounded by love

I am here beside you
And will always be

And then a voice, your voice:

You are not alone
You are surrounded
You are not alone
Never
You are not alone
You are surrounded
You are not alone
You’re surrounded by love

We’ve Already Won

Pushed and pulled in every direction
Stop telling me what to do
I’m gonna be the one who’s driving
Gonna burn all the red lights

It doesn’t matter what they say
We’ve already won
It doesn’t matter what happens now
We’ve already won

I’m not gonna ask for too much
I’m not gonna make a scene
Give me voice, Give me my band
And we’ll proceed to
Kick your ass

It doesn’t matter what they say
We’ve already won
It doesn’t matter what happens now
We’ve already won
It doesn’t matter what they say
We’ve already won
It doesn’t matter what happens now
We’ve already won

When the lights go out
And they’ve taken their seats
And the curtains come up
And the music begins

We’ve already won
It doesn’t matter what they say
We’ve already won
It doesn’t matter what happens now
We’ve already won

ABOUT

Band 5 is a unique rock musical in which the audience will experience a story told via the combination of an episodic narrative of dramatic scenes and live performances by teen musicians/actors, taking the overall structure of a two-sided concept album in which the “sides” are the acts, and the individual “tracks” are the scenes. The primary setting is a rehearsal room at the Green Mountain Jam Camp, with other settings emerging as the story progresses. The dramatic portions of the “tracks” consist of both group scenes as well as more individually-focused scenes which explore the internal worlds of the teenage characters, using different modalities for each.

The adolescent/teenage period can be a tumultuous one in which they are not only trying to find their identity and place, but feel out of control and without a voice in a world where adults make decisions that affect their lives. Art and a sense of community can be game-changing allies as they navigate these waters.

Given the universality and relatability of the topics dealt with in the piece, the intended audience is not only adolescents and teenagers, but their parents and younger siblings as well.

David Kaminester

Co-Writer

Hailing from the New York City area, David’s musical career began in early childhood when he was warned against griding his teeth to nubs while imitating the drums and instructed to stop singing “Copacabana” in class. Heeding none of this, he was promptly sent to the principal’s office on the very first day of First Grade for continuing to play Beethoven’s Fifth on the classroom piano. Eventually, he found his true musical passion- the guitar- at age 12, teaching himself to play after falling in love with The Beatles, and got his first taste of performing on stage in school and community plays and musicals. His musical tastes branched out into folk, Appalachian, indie/alternative, as well as the union of rock music with theater. These interests remained as he pursued a career in medicine, meeting his lifelong creative partner Steven Herskovitz in 1995 while attending McGill University Medical School, where they helped found the folk-rock trio “Raise It”, which provided him his first bona fide platform to write songs. He returned to the states in 1999 to pursue training and, subsequently, a career in Child Psychiatry and psychotherapy, for which he has been in practice in the Boston area since 2004. While visiting Montreal in 2010, the idea of creating a work of art uniting his lifelong passions germinated, resulting in the birth of what would eventually become Band 5, which has been a true labor of love for him and Steven.

David has many interests, including science, history, anime/graphic novels, video games, sports, literature, cinema, and coffee shops. He splits time between his beloved towns of Concord, MA and Woodstock, NY, and is a devoted son, brother, uncle, and cat dad.
